Attending Church Summary

Those of you who have been reading for a while will remember that I have started to attend a church. I started to write this series of posts as I was still looking for a church. If I remember correctly I got on my high horse the morning after I went to the church. For me these are real struggles. As I have looked through them and worked to write a summary post I think that what I really struggle with is:

  1. Christians need to be real and
  2. Christians need to be socially responsible

So I will finish this series by discussing how I feel we can make church relevant today.

The Church needs to be real today to be relevant in people’s world’s. We Christians need to be real to our neighbours. We need to show them that we too hurt and sometimes ever question what we believe. I know that I don’t have a good answer for why God lets bad things happen to good people. Even if you do talk to someone who had a family member involvedin 9/11 and see if you pat answer satisfies thier hurt. We need to really exist in the hurting broken world that is around us and accept those who are hurting. We shouldn’t be waiting for them to clean themselves up before we accept them. Jesus worked with the hurting, he came for the sick. So let’s do the same.

Churches also need to show that they are socially responsible. The Bible talks about how the church should be taking care of the widows. Jesus feeds the multitudes when they are hungry. He eats with the sinners and talks with those outside the city gates. We as a church need to step into our community and take responsibility for the problems we see their. We need to take care of our own widows and homeless, not push it off on the city. I will leave you with this quote from Rob Bell

“It is not ultimately about the church; it’s about all the people God wants to bless through the church. When the church loses sight of this, it loses heart. This is especially true today in the world we live in where so many people are hostile to the church many for good reason. We reclaim the church as a blessing machine not only because that is what Jesus intended from the beginning but also because serving people is the only way their perceptions of church are ever going to change.”

  1. You are right on! Church isn’t there for us to hide behind its four walls. As soldiers for Christ, the world is where we are supposed to be fighting for our faith, – the church our campsite where we can rest, retreat and recuperate before heading out again. Jesus never did any miracles in the synagogue, he was OUT there…touching lives, healing hearts and loving people.
    Bless you heaps,

  2. sounds like you are living by example. You are attracting rather than promoting…thank you.

  3. Jesus is alive and his spirit is moving in his people. No matter what the church institution does his true chuch his people will never fade.
